The present Dalai Lama was born in Tagcher Amdo on July 5, 1935. He is named Jetsun Jampel Ngawang Lobsang Yishey Tenzin Gyatso, and was installed with customary ceremonial as the 14th Dalai Lama in February, 1940. The installation ceremony was attended by Sir Basil Gould, Political Officer in Sikkim, and by the Chinese representative Mr. Wu Chung Hsin, and by representatives from Sikkim and Nepal. The Dalai Lama comes of middle class parents who have now settled with their son in Lhasa. He has three brothers and one sister, the oldest brother being the incarnate Lama of Kumbum Monastery in Hsining in N. W. China. Tibetans seem well pleased with their youthful ruler, and on all sides are heard glowing reports of the childÕs intelligence, behaviour, and personality.

[In the wake of the Chinese invasion of Tibet the Dalai Lama was enthroned on November, 17 1950 and vested with all powers as temporal and religious ruler of Tibet. In 1959 he had to flee Tibet and take refuge in India. He is now the head of the Tibetan Government in Exile based in Dharamsala, India ]
