We had an early call from Phondong Shape who is going to Samye with the Regent. He brought the customary return presents in case we should not be here when he returns. The Yapshi Kung also called bringing presents chosen with considerable care. The Regent sent presents through one of his officers. In the afternoon Jigme Depon came in. He too is accompanying the Regent, to take photographs; an eloquent comment on the happy-go-lucky methods of Tibet. Jigme is the only officer with any knowledge of machine guns and the Tashi Lama, is believed to have started for Tibet with his Chinese escort.
