Spelling of Tibetan words: Historically, photographers and scholars have used many different phonetic versions of Tibetan words. Variations still exist today and since there is no standard format, we have decided to use the most common phonetic spellings of Tibetan words that we found in the documents used in this project: that is, the spellings used by British photographers between 1920 and 1950. We have tried to be as consistent in this as possible but we are aware that some discrepancies still remain. A few key terms already appear in Tibetan script on the site and we hope to translate some of the text into Tibetan at some point in the future. Wylie transliteration will also be added for people and places.
