In this image, A. J. Hopkinson informs us that Lt Sangster of the 13th Frontier Force (left) and Captain Mulligan, the Medical Officer at Gyantse (right) are emulating in their pose a popular contemporary advertisement for Austin cars featuring two figures known as 'Pass and Joyce'. Their apparent humour in this respect may have been prompted by the ongoing difficulties that all the Agency and related staff had during this time concerning the plan of Political Officer F. M. Bailey to institute a motorised communication system between Gangtok and Gyantse
