Groups of people gathered around a chorten in the centre of the image during the festival of Saga Dawa, which commemorates the enlightenment of the Buddha and his attainment of nirvana. A long line of pilgrims can be seen on the outer pilgrimage route around Lhasa, receding into the distance. A figure wearing a hat is visible in the bottom right hand corner, a horse with an European style sadle is on the edge of the frame.
