Monks and spectators watching a procession of mounted lay officials below the Potala beside the shrine with the sloping tiled roof which was situated beside the Sho pillar. The horsemen, lay and monk officials, are preceding the State sedan chair and two others. This was at the time of a rehearsal for the Dalai Lama's return to Lhasa. The staircase leading up to the eastern courtyard of the Potala can be seen in the background.
