Biographical Information - Jigme Taring in gyaluche, the dress of the Princes of Tibet, which was only worn at ceremonies such as New Year. Jigme was the nephew of Raja Taring of Sikkim and had attended St Paul’s School in Darjeeling, India. In 1936 he was a Dëpon (general in the Tibetan army) and was married to Rinchen Dolma (“Mary”) Taring with whom he lived in a small house next to the Tsarong mansion. Both he and his wife spoke fluent English and were friendly with the members of the British Mission. Jigme later became a member of the Tibetan government and the chief architect in Lhasa. After 1959 he continued to work for the Tibetan government-in-exile whilst his wife founded the Tibetan Homes Foundation in Mussorie, Northern India. [CH 2003]
