TENDONG SHAPPE FOR LUNCH AND FAREWELL

Went to Potala at 10.30 and were placed in room overlooking courtyard - description of Hashang and skeleton dance, black hat dancers and old military uniforms; resumes writing Mission Diary from Chapman

Writes letter home describing New Year ceremonies [MS Or Richardson 3 folio 57ff]
Friday 12th February 1937
Visit Potala at about 8.30 for official ceremonies and special lay group of dancing boys - after had to visit members of Cabinet and others giving presents from Gould to those who had visited. Visited Dzasa of Kundeling after Shapes “who is becoming rather a special friend”. Also states he was the only visitor that Tendong Shape received this day as he was in retirement. Continues letter to parents before bed [MS Or Richardson 3 folio 60ff]. “Through the anxiety of out guide that we should not commit a breach of etiquette by arriving late we were conducted to the Potala well before daylight” [Richardson H., Ceremonies of the Lhasa Year, London: Serindia Publications, pp.11-12]
Saturday 13th February 1937
Had to visit about 8 lesser officials with New Year greetings. Didn’t attend 2nd Day ceremonies at Potala. Saw Pole trick from road as was out paying calls - took at least 4 1/2 hrs in the afternoon [MS Or Richardson 3 folio 63]

RICHARDSON VISITS SHAPPES on behalf of Political Officer. Snow in morning. Tsarong came to breakfast. Lunch with Tsarong at Lhalu house. Archery competition - bored and spent most of the time in a small room with Mondong. New Year At Home Ceremony at Tsarong’s house

Many visitors paying farewells - many telegrams to decypher

Remains in Lhasa with Dagg and Dr Bo

Clearing up and sending telegrams - moved into Dekyi Lingka house rather than tent

‘Shows’ [MS Or Richardson 3 folio 66]. In evening went to Ragashar’s house. 15th Day of 1st Tibetan month (Buddha attained Nirvana) - huge butter offerings outside Cathedral. Comments that mail will be more irregular because no longer has the expensive post service that serviced the Mission.
