Left Phari. Went to Dota (10 miles from Phari) and then Gautsa (5 miles), the Lingmathang plain after lunch (comments that he sent a photo of it). Arrived at Yatung in the evening [A. J. Saturday 2nd April 1927
Went around bazaar in afternoon - want to plant young poplars there. Went to see the wooden temple [A. J. Comments that a census of the bazaar will take place in the summer [ibid., page 10]. “I have got a lot of photos back this week, but I’m keeping them back for the present as I want to show them to Col. Bailey. I have no more films, so can’t take any more at present. I think it’s just as well, as I want to photograph everybody I see - As O’Connor rightly says “Every Tibetan might to be [sic] in a museum” [ibid., p.10]

[NB: this day’s entry is headed Sunday April 5th. The 5th was in fact a Tuesday, and so this entry could be from the 3rd. However, Hopkinson tended to get days correct in preference to dates in his journals, and Sundays being distinctive for colonial officials, this date has been selected] Had Rai Bahadur Norbhu and Rai Bahadur Wangdi to lunch (his comments seem to suggest that this title had only recently been acquired by Wangdi) [[A. Arrived at Camp Sedongchen or Sedonchen in Sikkim [A. J. Went via Rinchengong, the last village in Tibet before Bhutan and through Jelep la. Heading back to Darjeeling via Kalimpong (to take Tibetan exam at Darjeeling). Passed old Chinese wall at Nyatong [Ngatong] up to Lamtang and via Kapup
