The road leading to Lhasa from Gyantse. Gyantse dzong can be seen on a steep hill in the lower centre background of the image. A small village is on the left and the larger building on the right is part of a monastery. People can be seen walking along the road towards Gyantse. Tami, Hopkinson's orderly, can be seen mounted on a white horse on the right of the image. Hopkinson and others based at Gyantse Trade Agency were on their way to have lunch with Taring Raja and his family, who lived 7 miles outside Gyantse along the Lhasa Road

Other Information

In Negative - 'A23' has been written on the right edge of the negative in black ink. The negative has been machine perforated along the right edge. 24 holes have been perforated in total [MS 05/05/2006]

Notes on print/mount - One contact print made from this negative is contained in A. J. Hopkinson's negative case with the negative. The print appears to have been removed from an album, as there are traces of black mounting paper around the edges of the print as if it has been taken out after previously being glued in place. A partially decipherable caption has been written on the back in pencil: "View of Gyantse from Lhasa Rd - (Tami in foreground)". The number 32 has been written on the front top right corner in pencil. [MS 24/06/2006]
