Main entrance from Norbu Lingka, down the broad new road from the Potala and Lhasa made about 1916. Note the sentry box on each side of the gate and the two long Prayer Poles (tar-shing); near each sentry box are the incense vessels (zang-bum). Similar ones are placed at intervals along the road to Lhasa, and in all the long thin brown sticks of incense are burnt whenever the Dalai Lama goes along the road.
