Notes on print/mount - 'BH 2' has been written on the back of the print in pencil, as has 'F. S. Chapman' along the bottom left edge of the print on the back [MS 01/04/2006]
Manual Catalogues - Caption in Chapman's hand-written list of negatives made whilst on the Mission to Lhasa, 1936-7 [See PRM Manuscripts Collection]: '4th r. [rank] official trotting past' [MS 01/04/2006]
Other Information - Dates: As this official is wearing ceremonial dress this photograph was probably taken on either
December 8th 1936, which was the anniversary of the death of Tsongkapa and an occasion at which all officials had to present themselves at the Potala, or December 10th 1936 on which day the 'Disease Chasing Ceremony' took place at Kundeling Monastery [MS 01/04/2006]
Other Information - Related Images: Images prefixed with 'BH.' comprise a group of negatives containing images of Officials, a Khampa man, Sir Basil Gould and various personnel on the Mission in 1936-7. They all seem to have been taken on, just prior to or immediately after December 10th 1936. This was the day on which an official visit was made to Kundeling Monastery to observe the 'Disease Chasing Ceremony' [MS 23/03/2006]
