Notes on print/mount - 'CA.37' has been written on the back of the print in pencil, as has 'F. S. Chapman', apparently in Chapman's own hand. Another number, possibly '137' appears also to have been written on the back and then cut through, making the number partially indecipherable [MS 09/03/2006]
Manual Catalogues - Caption in Chapman's hand-written list of negatives made whilst on the Mission to Lhasa, 1936-7 [See PRM Manuscripts Collection]: 'BTA’s [British Trade Agent’s] house, Yatung'; PRM Manuscripts Collection: ‘List of Tibetan Prints and Negatives’ - Book 1, From Gangtok to the Natu La August 1936: ‘3/3 - British Trade Agent’s bungalow at Yatung. The Dalai Lama stayed here in 1910 when fleeing from Chinese in Lhasa and India’ [MS 08/04/2006]
Other Information - Related Images: Images prefixed with 'CA' comprise a group of negatives containing images of the Residency, Gangtok and the Mission party preparing to go to Lhasa, the Maharanee of Sikkim, journey near Karponang, Changu Lake, Champithang and Chumbi Valley, Kargyu monastery and Yatung. At the top of the list is the comment ‘8, 9, 13, 17, 19, 20, 28, 31, 33, 36, 37 already enlarged 4x6. 3 copies’ [MS 08/04/2006]
Other Information - Setting: "[We] walked up to the Agency, which overlooks the village - a lovely long low-roofed bungalow with a glass verandah in front. It possesses a most heavenly garden: the drive bordered by riotous masses of nasturtiums, green lawns, a pergolah of rambling roses in full bloom, a paved garden with huge pansies, lupins, ... all you could wish for. I should have liked to live there. ... The rest house is very comfortable and lies on the other side of the river. On this side are the village, the barracks, the Agency, the Post Office" ['Lhasa: The Holy City', F. Spencer Chapman, London: Chatto & Windus, 1938, p.28]
