After going through hand-over with Vance, all visited the Monastery and lunched with the Kenchung - describes the meal. Afterwards Hopkinson looked over the government rest house and the ‘English cemetery’

Met 4 miles from Gyantse by mounted escort (25 Sikh soldiers) and by Major Vance (aged 30) who was acting British Trade Agent, two military officers Sangster and Moss, Conductor Major IASC (aged 40) and Mr [Henry] Martin (aged 45). Friday 21st January 1927

Crossed the Tang La in the morning. Comments that Tami, his orderly, Tami’s brother Hubbu and one of the syce, Hlakdun Dundup, are half Tibetan and half Chinese in origin [ibid. p.5]. Arrived at Phari at mid-day. Later the Phari East Dzongpon called [ibid. p.7].

Tuesday 18th January 1927

Wednesday 26th January 1927
At Yatung. Lunched with the Tibetan Trade Agent, the Depon (to be 70 years old in one month’s time), at Pipitang, with Sonam and the Doctor Babu [A. J. Comments that his most aged chaprassis is his head chaprassi at Gyantse, Parsang [Pasang], who is 45 [ibid., p.10]. Comments that he is enclosing a few photographs, which he received back in the mail yesterday [ibid., p.11]

Yatung. Comments that had no formal work on this day as it was the last Saturday of the month and therefore a holiday in India. Comments that he has arranged the photographs chronologically [A. J. Saturday 15th January 1927
At Gyantse. Comments that ‘the other morning’ he had visited the civil hospital with the Doctor. Then went through the suburbs of Gyantse with Tibetan clerk Wangdi to the Riton or mountain retreat on a mountain to the north east of the city. Welcomed by a young monk and saw the interior of the monastery and the prayer wheels. Went there to ask permission to transplant some of their wild roses in the spring. Comments also that ‘one afternoon’ Mrs Tsarong came to call and describes her impressive headdress [ibid., D-E]. Today was visited by the Nepalese representative and also went round the Tibetan part of the fort. Henry Martin (Head Clerk ) and Major (Commissariat Conductor) came to dinner and stayed till after midnight [ibid., p.J]

Visited the Tering Rajah by invitation at Tering - 7 miles out along the Lhasa road [A. J. Comments on the pleasant ride past villages and nunneries. Comments on Jigme Taring being ‘a nice boy of 18’ [ibid., p. G] and the Rani: “We sat round and talked and drank Tibetan tea and beer and looked at photos” [ibid]. Gives description of Sangster’s waking tea ritual
Sunday 30th January 1927
Yatung. Went to Donker Monastery 6 miles to north. On the way, visited Geling [Galing] village to photograph some houses (comments that he has already sent some photos of this village to Eleanor Hopkinson).
